Interesting Facts About Catalina Island
Destination Catalina...The Corporate ChoiceThe Island
Catalina Island is a year-round resort destination located 22 miles off the coast of  Southern California.

Avalon is a quaint, Mediterranean-like, seaside resort, nestled on Avalon Bay. It is a pedestrian friendly town, where walking is the most common mode of transportation next to golf carts. Avalon is one of the few cities in the country where it is legal to drive golf carts on city streets, and is the only city in California authorized by the State Legislature to regulate the number and size of vehicles authorized to drive on city streets. Currently, there is a 12-15 year waiting list to own a car on the island.

Also located on the island is the small village of Two Harbors, located approximately 26 road miles from Avalon. Two Harbors, known as The Isthmus, is a yachting community with about 200 year-round residents.

The vast majority of Catalina Island is rugged wilderness area, and is privately owned and protected by the Catalina Island Conservancy.

Destination Catalina...The Corporate ChoiceThe Casino
The Casino, Avalon's world-famous landmark, is not a gambling casino at all. In fact, casino is an Italian word meaning place of entertainment or gathering. It was never intended to house gambling and doesn't at all to this day. The building, perched at the edge of Avalon Bay, houses the Catalina Island Museum, the Catalina Art Association Art Gallery, a fitness center, the Avalon Theatre, which shows first run movies nightly, and a 12,000 square foot ballroom, which can accommodate 1,200 guests.

Catalina Golf Course
Built in 1892, it is acknowledged as the first golf course west of the Rocky Mountains. The Bobby Jones Amateur Golf Tournament began at the Catalina Golf Course in 1931 and was hosted thereafter until 1941 and after the war from 1947-55. Today, the nine-hole, 32-par course still remains a scenic and challenging course for low and high handicappers alike.

Destination Catalina...The Corporate ChoiceCatalina's Buffalo
Catalina is one of the few places where you can see American Bison, or buffalo, roaming free in the wild. Fourteen buffalo were brought to Catalina in 1924 as extras in the filming of "The Vanishing American." When the film was finished the company packed up and left, leaving the buffalo behind.  Today there are approximately 200 buffalo roaming Catalina.

Avalon Tuna Club
Founded in 1898, the Tuna Club is the oldest fishing club in the United States. The Tuna Club is a California Historical Landmark (#997) and is on the National Registry of Historical Places. Many notable dignitaries and personalities have been members of the Tuna Club such as Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, General George S. Patton, Cecil B. DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, and Bing Crosby.

Zane Grey
In 1926, American author Zane Grey built a pueblo-style home on the hillside overlooking Avalon Bay. He spent most of his later life in Avalon writing and fishing. Grey wrote 89 books including The Vanishing American and Riders of the Purple Sage. His home is now a popular hotel.
